Text difference finder

Paste two versions of a text to see which lines and fragments were added or removed. The comparison also reveals small changes such as a missing space or altered punctuation.

It comes in handy when reviewing revisions, but also for developers who want to compare JSON configurations. You can see, line by line, what has changed—without having to manually scan for discrepancies. Even small changes, like a space or a single letter, are clearly highlighted.

How does it work?

The widget compares two texts line by line. If a line differs, it is broken down into smaller text fragments: parts that are the same, parts that have been removed, and new additions. These differences are shown visually using colour highlights: removed text appears in red, added text in green. Rather than highlighting every individual character—which tends to look chaotic—the tool groups differences into coherent text blocks. This results in a clearer and more natural view of the changes, without a clutter of coloured characters.

Everything runs directly in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, meaning your text remains private and it’s safe to compare sensitive content. In addition, the texts you enter are temporarily stored in your browser, so you won’t lose anything if you refresh the page.

How differences are shown

The tool compares the two inputs and highlights inserted, removed, and unchanged text. It is intended for readable text comparisons, not semantic code review. Changes in whitespace, punctuation, capitalisation, and line endings can count as differences even when the rendered result looks similar. Moved text is normally represented as a removal and an insertion rather than as a move.

Large inputs may take longer to compare in the browser. Both text fields are stored in localStorage, so clear them after comparing sensitive content on a shared device.
